HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRIAN!!
‘ya old fart.
Brian, Let me add to the Happy Birthday wishes obviously flying in from all your fans. I can’t call you an old fart since I’m old enough to be your father (why DO I listen to this show?) Belated kudos on number 100 – 102. You and the show have grown in so many ways, I think the best is yet to come.
Happy Birthday BMO!
SWP: Enjoy the game, hopefully the Godfather makes some money on this one. I won’t be there, I can’t stand that shithole they call Ames.

Ha your catching up with me, the bald patch on the head comes next, thats why dutch calls you brother.
Mr Fryer pants.
I’ve been meaning to bring up this topic for a while, but purposely waited until after Labour Day to get a better perspective. How much of a party weekend is Labour Day weekend, anyway? I’ve heard that it’s usually considered the last weekend of the summer, but what does that translate to? It’s a long weekend, so is there an insane amount of tourists in town? Or is it a time when “regulars” like to head down and party?
I’m asking because I’m looking to have my bachelor party there next Labour Day (yeah, sometimes I manage to plan wayyyy in advance). I’d be going with a whole bunch of guys who are looking for any excuse to visit Vegas because they’ve never gotten around to it yet. Is it a bad weekend for Vegas Virgins? Do the crowds cause too much of a mess? Or is there a great time to be had as usual? Obviously I’ll bring this up more as we approach The Big Party, but I wanted to get your opinions on the potential date while it was still fresh in your minds.
While I’m at it, I’ve actually got a good friend of mine heading down at the end of October (right before SEMA) for one of his buddy’s bachelor party. Does anyone have any suggestions on what they should do? I know there are a few companies out there that specialize in organizing these things, but are they any good? Does anyone suggest that route? As the resident “Vegas Expert,” my buddy’s turned to me for advice, but the last trip I planned was for my engagement… I doubt he’s looking for a romantic dinner and Cirque shows!!!!
Great jobs to Trust and Hawk for the Indian TAI
Oh, and one last thing: happy birthday Mr. Pants!

Throwing 1 more official play in for tonight:
LSU -40 over Middle Tennessee St.
I know it’s a shit load of points, but under the lights in Baton Rouge is a miserable place to play, and LSU has shown they’re not afraid to run up a score. Not to mention, pick a direction Tennessee St.!
My picks:
Cinci
Houston
Green Bay
My favorite time of the year Baseball and Football on the TV!
San Diego +3.5
Tennessee +7
Detroit -3 (5 star lock of the century)
One last addition:
Nebraska +11 over USC
Tough to play in Lincoln, looking to keep it within a touchdown
Jimmymac, Slashdog, HawkeyeBrad, and LetsGoHawks:
Live from Jack Trice Stadium in Ames via a Blackberry. Not only do the Iowa State Cyclones cover, they win outright over the Iowa Hawkeyes.
God we needed that one…
Week 2 NFL picks:
Indianapolis
Jacksonville
Pittsburgh
Bob- first, it’s Labor, not Labour (yea, I know that’s how y’all spell it, but it’s our holiday)
I’ll let the boys answer about Vegas — but in general, I’d say Labor day is pretty far down on the list of popular holidays in the US.
While it IS an official Government holiday (and everyone likes a paid day off from work!) It’s only slightly more popular than President’s day (which is in February and it’s usually too cold out to do anything) and much less popular than July 4th (the other major summer holiday).
Usually, Labor Day is the last chance families have to take the little brats on a trip before they go back to school – so the roads and airports are usually very croweded.
Damn it. Got greedy with that last bet. I should have asked for my money back when I saw Larry the Cable Guy introducing the Nebraska offense.
Brian, Nebraska is just emerging into respectabilty but obviously is a long ways from recruiting the horses they need to run with the big time programs. I know this doesnt count with you guys but at work I had U.S.C. -9 and to me this seemed a lead pipe, godfather colonel mick mars lock.
BMO, TD, please feel free to cover the Iowa v. Iowa State result extensively in the Sunday show.
Steve in West Plam, Excellect job in bringing the Clones luck this weekend for the unexpected win. Even if they go 1-10 this year, it will now be a success. I think Brad’s post from earlier helped jinx the Hawks!
I am suprised that this Godfather Guy who is afraid to appear in person on TAI picked this game. Clearly Iowa was favored heavily on paper as the apparantly better team. However the Iowa v. Iowa State game is one of those games that can either be very lopsided, but also carries a better than average chance of being a very close game. Its history is clear. Even LGH did not have Iowa on his picks on post 54 and I certainly would not have touched it even though common sense would make this look attractive at 17.
I went to the UNC UVA game today while I was in the area. Unexpectedly an excellent game UVA won 22-20.
Guys, on the subject of holidays; how many days holiday does the average person get in the U.S?
NFL Picks Week 2
Seattle
Dallas
Detroit
Unofficial Upset Special. Vikings to win outright. Minnesota on the money line.
PS. Dude…why is NOBODY talking about the INSANE clinic that T. Woods has been putting on the last 3 weeks. The brother is about to get PAID. Talking about putting your foot across the throat of the competition and squishing the life out of it. Absolute Dominance.
Yet more Rugby World Cup picks for the masses.
There are three games for today, all featuring the smaller teams in the competition.
France vs Namibia (France -63)
Samoa vs Tonga (Samoa -20)
Fiji vs Canada (Fiji -2)
You can take Samoa and France to win there games, but there’s no money in that. Normally I’d see both teams covering the points on this, but this year all the games have been hard.
Samoa performed well against South Africa and Tonga weren’t to great againts the USA, but the big game for Samoa will be the England game next week, so how hard they play in the latter stages once they’ve the win wrapped up worries me. So whilst I like the line of Tonga +20 I’m just not yet convinced. I won’t be betting it though.
As for the French game – they’ve got something to prove but I can’t decide if France are going to bounce back or not. Once again a win is pretty much a given, but how hard they play towards the end is the key. Namibia played well against Ireland, but having seen the Ireland vs Georgia game that may be because Ireland are really quite bad at the moment. That said though 63 points is a lot. So I’ll be taking Namibia +63 in this one.
Whilst leaves the only really interesting game (Fiji vs Canada). It’s a tight call but I favour Fiji in this one. But the interesting thing here is the lines.
Fiji to cover is 6/5 and Canada to win outright is Evens.
So there is the option of a no risk bet here. Equal sided bets on Fiji -2 and Canda to win. If Canada win you’ll make no money, but also not lose any, Fiji cover you’ll make a little. Not what I’ll be doing but this doesn’t happen very often.
So my bets for today are:
Fiji (-2)
Namibia (+63)
But if I was playing with other peoples money I’d also be tempted by:
Tonga (+20)
The success of South Africa and Australia now brings my record to 6-1-0 (I took Australia to Win as well as the -9 handicap).
Just went to place my Namibia bet and sadly the Fiji (-2) line had been suspended. Ah well, the idea of a free bet was nice whilst it lasted.
Of course the “Vig” in Vegas would have ruined this.
BTW anyone know why it’s called Vig?
Mungus – 10 or 11 Holidays per year is pretty much the norm in the US as far as days off of work go.
Patch – couldn’t agree more about Tiger. I was at the final round of the BMW outside of chicago last week and as far as I could tell – he’s playing a different game than the rest of these guys.
Though I do think that the course for the FEDEX FINAL is doing a disservice to the coverage – one or two more years like this and they’ll be looking for a new venue – no matter how good the history of East Lake is.
Heading to the Bears game today – so a late start and September weather means hours of tailgating – picked me up two six packs of Fat Tire for the occassion!
Mungus, my first trip to Vegas was over a Labor day weekend. Yes it was busy, but nothing like New Year. The biggest problem I had with it was he price hike for the rooms, but I guess this applies to pretty much any one day holiday.
Oh! and there were a lot of drunken people in there 20′s. So depending on what you’re looking to do that can be pain.
My NFL Picks
Cincinnatti
Green Bay
New Orleans
10 or 11 days off? Wow, that sucks – I take it that those days are for your main vacation. May I ask how many national holidays you guys get?
Bob, yea there is a real price hike over my second weekend and that’s a bit of a drag but the prices are OK for the rest of the trip so I guess it’ll even itself out. I was there in June for nine days and that was way too long, so like a tosser, I have booked ten days for this next trip – Its gonna get messy!! LOL!!
For Tommy D’s dead pool I take Charlie Weis. Either he’s going to drop from a heart attack, or some crazed ND alum will kill him. (He’s only 51 so he’s worth big points!)
With their recruiting power how can this team be this bad. I’m not even a ND fan (Hook ‘em Horns!) and it really bothers me.
Week 2 – NFL Picks – Cincinnati, Detroit, New Orleans
Mungus, I tend to limit my trips to a week but I like the idea of a 10 day trip next time.
One question though, do you stay at one hotel or move around?
Bob, last trip we stayed at The Mirage for the entire time. It was good to get settled in and have a ‘base’ for the time there. I also tend to play where I stay so I got some decent comps at the end of the trip. This upcoming trip should be interesting as we are currently booked into a suite at The MGM for a few days and then we will move to The Wynn which will allow me to expose my pasty white belly to a larger audience.
We have still to decide on one final place to end the trip but where to go after The Wynn? My current plan will be to hit MGM on two days of gambling and then relax at The Wynn, after which I will probably book another MGM property and hit that one for a couple of days before we return. I NEVER play for comps, but it seems that living in the U.K. is really hurting my ability to get any upfront offers so I want to concentrate all my play into two intense periods at one company. The only spoiler for this strategy is that I have never lost whilst playing at The Wynn – I mean, I just have to go there for an hour and I leave $500 up so the temptation will no doubt be too much to resist a little flutter here and there but my bank roll may not stretch to ten days play.
Picks for today:
Cin -7
Sea -2.5
Hou +6.5
Good luck everyone.
Week 2 Picks
Cin – 7
Sea – 2.5
Niners + 3
Cin -7 NO -3.5 Vikings +3
Mungus, that’s a pretty good combination. I like to spend 1 full night downtown playing so I’ve been toying with just booking a room down there for a night, it’s touch and go as to whether or not it’s cheaper than a taxi there and back.
I think for my next trip I might spend half North Strip and half South Strip, so Manadalay Bay or Luxor then head to the other end. I’ve never stayed at the Wynn, in fact I’ve only played there once, so that might be a good choice.
I did want to head out for the Hatton vs Mayweather fight, but it’s a busy time workwise so I may have to settle for a week or so over Christmas.
Mungus, why don’t you make your way back towards the middle of the strip after your time at the Wynn and spend a few days at Bellagio? I stayed at both MGM Grand (Skylofts, actually) and Bellagio during my last stay and got to experience a whole different vibe between the two places. I would’ve loved to experience the Wynn, too, had I been there any longer.
And think about it, there’s a whole new crowd to whom you can expose your midsection…
Bob, work is always a major bummer for me when it comes to booking time away, as I work shifts, but its not all bad as I can dream the night away thinking about Grey Goose and Whiskey Sours
I am holding out for a deal at Mandalay Bay or The Hotel, for my last few nights as I have never stayed there but would love too. I am something of a Vodka drinker and I like the sound of what they have to offer!
I have stayed at Luxor a couple of times in a tower room and its been great, although the rooms are currently so cheap that there is a chance of getting some drunk fuckwits in the next room keeping you awake at night and yes, The Luxor is the only place where we have had to move room due to the tosser’s next door.
I think it’s a good idea to book a room down town rather than worrying about getting back to the strip and there are some really crazy cheap deals to be had down there most of the time.
BigDabdBob – SkyLofts? Wow, nice job mate! (I mean REALLY nice job!) I can’t stretch to that, although Bellagio would be amazing, but I am a slave to the offers and deals that float around the Internet until these bloody casinos come to appreciate my business – buggers!! LOL!
It would be good to expose my oversized belly to a more beautiful crowd especially as it’s the only way I get to be described as a ‘whale’ in Vegas!
Mungus, that is 9-11 or so holidays per year. Most people also get 10-15 sick & vacation days per year with more time off the longer you work for a company.
Labor day does get busy here since it is that last major holiday of the summer and the only day off for most people until Veterans Day in November. about 37% of visitors to Vegas come from Southern California, so any 3 day weekend is going to be busy here. slowest time of the years is between Thanksgiving & Christmas. before i moved here, my friends & i used to come here every year in december for birthday and we got some insane deals.
I think a decent poll question may be the most desiped/loathed franchise in sports. Brian’s mention of Nebraska has brought that thought to my brain. I CANNOT STAND THOSE FOOLS. I’m not talking about big rivalries but teams that many outside of the core fans can’t stand. These teams are typically big winners or have very annoying fans. My first thoughts and I don’t mind all these teams, but they are ones I see mentioned often:
The New York Yankees
Norte Dame Football
Nebraska Football
Duke Men’s Basketball
The LA Lakers
The Dallas Cowboys (at least in the late 70′s/early 80′s)
Thoughts/Other ideas.
English Bob – That Samoan team fucked you up big time.
Doh! Bob, I really wish I had read all your post before I jumped in, Looks to me like you actually had an inkling that could happen – Tony how about a remove stupid post button?
Ace, I wasn’t expecting a Tongan win, but Tonga +20 looked good. Sadly, it was a game I stayed away from totally.
Now if you want to talk about being royally shafted – Namibia having a man sent of after less than 20 minutes would be a good start. I’ve got Namibia +63 and at half time France already have a 37 point lead.
Still it’ll only be my second loss of the tournament so far.
Best decision I ever made was to keep my wallet in my pocket this Sunday. Sweet Jesus, I was wrong across the board.
No Joke. What a bloodbath everywhere.
Slash- I agree with you on betting on IA/ISU. I didn’t want to say anything against the Hawks, but I there’s no such thing as a deadlock when it comes to that rivalry. I would never have bet IA to cover that spread. We should have stepped up and said something before hand, but like I said I didn’t want to say anything against IA.
BMO & Dutch- I will be fast forwarding through any talk of that game. I am forgetting it ever happened. I found my inner degenerate and went to the local casino last night and drank away my sorrows all night at the Vid Poker bar.
Mungus, SkyLofts was for 1 night only, and there was method to my madness: I was proposing to my girlfriend. I felt I needed all the help I could get for her to say “yes,” hence the overwhelming room! If you’re interested, have a look at http://picasaweb.google.com/rfdc81/AVegasEngagement for some pics.
When’s your trip? You may also want to consider getting an Amex Platinum card for the trip. Before you yell at me for suggesting a credit card with a $34,957,846,439 yearly fee is somehow worth it, consider that it has some pretty heavy benefits for travellers. I used the following features to save about $800 on my last trip in April:
-Preferential room rates at many premium hotels (Bellagio, Wynn, SkyLofts, TheHotel, Venetian, etc.). These are usually in the neighbourhood of 10% off the least expensive rooms.
-Complimentary upgrade (based on availability). In my case in April, my room rate was $179 / night, which is about right for the typical “deluxe” room at Bellagio. The room we actually received was a lakeview room with a going rate during our stay of $259.
-Complimentary breakfast for 2 throughout the stay. At Bellagio and some other places, this means $20 coupons per person to use at the buffet or cafe. Time your visit to the buffet properly, and you can have a great lunch on their coin.
-Late checkout… depending on the time of your flight, checking out at 4pm can be useful.
-Welcome gift (hotel’s choice). We got $100 certificate to use at the MGM Grand Spa and our choice of the same at Bellagio or $85 gift certificate to Sensi for lunch.
The reservations are made through Amex’s travel service, but they’re done directly with the hotel, meaning any comps you earn during your stay are applied as usual. This is contrary to more “pre-paid” offers you’ll find on the net.
Anyway, I don’t want to sound like too much of a salesperson, but when I ran the numbers for my particular trip, I was absolutely astonished that I could stay at Bellagio for the price of a regular room at Mirage or a small suite at TI.
fobes, is the Californian crowd conducive to a good bachelor party experience? I think I know the answer… What about the end of October? If I understand correctly, it’s kind of a slow time. The boys still shouldn’t have a hard time having fun?
Forgot to mention, no more Rugby World Cup games until Tuesday. So you all get a day off.
Fuggin shehawks and viqueens. What a bunch of collapses. Weak.
Could Denver please quit it with these close games and just go out and beat the pants off a team for a change? Please?
bob, i am sure the boys will have fun no matter when you come. except for november/december the weekends are pretty much always fairly busy with plenty to do.
tried to login to the live show today, but my computer had fits loading the chat feature, so i finally gave up. hope the show went well. i’ll listen to the podcast and hopefully it will work next week.
