That Billy Martin Sure New How To Tip

It may be the dog days of summer but the fellas managed to clumsily patch together a sports show with their usual professionalism.

Topics on the day include, NFC favorites and week one predictions by our very own prognosticator, does David Beckham actually play soccer, ESPN’s miserable original programming, and bingo finally getting the attention it deserves.

You Spelled “Knew” wrong. Can’t turn off the copy editor in me.

Looking forward to listening on my way home today. I did want to chastise BMo for last week’s interview of Fyregirl. She said there was only one thing you could not ask about, which I assume was the particulars of her case and I totally respect that.

Why then no questions about lesbos in jail? Huh? What kind of man are you when you don’t ask about lesbos in jail? I’m disappointed in you.

Speaking of Scottie Pippen, how bout the most overrated NBA preseason roster of all time 1998-99 Rockets. As good as Carroll Dawson was for so long as a GM, I still cant believe he brought in Scottie Pippen(never a leader), Charles Barkley(the ultimate anti-role model), and Bryce Drew(a couple of good NCAA torunament games gone way too far).

“I figure wax it or shave it, same ball game there” I can’t wait for Dr. Dutch’s life story “The details of my life are quite inconsequential… very well, where do I begin? My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet. My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. My childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we’d make meat helmets. When I was insolent I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds- pretty standard really. At the age of twelve I received my first scribe. At the age of fourteen a Zoroastrian named Vilma ritualistically shaved my testicles. There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum… it’s breathtaking- I highly suggest you try it.” Hookers, drinking it’s all hereditary.

Sorry Regular Guy. Hmmm, who would have thought that a guy who corrects the grammar in a podcast write up would depend on the internet for sexual thrills? Learn something “knew” every day.

I have to say that you guys did nail the probable reason why Football (of the Soccer kind) has not made it in the USA and also why American Football has failed outside of the states.
I actually enjoy watching American football but the attempted start up’s over here, were of teams of low quality players, who simply could not make it at a decent level in the States.
The TV coverage started off very popular when it consisted of highlights of the American games and faded fast once they started showing highlights of the UK or European secoind rate leagues.
Nowadays we can actually tune in to games on NASN. The problem with that is its a subscription channel that costs extra money over the standard package.
For a while I subscribed and really enjoyed watching Baseball, was not to bothered with Basketball (much more fun to play than watch) and somewhat enjoyed the America Football and especially the motor racing.
The problem was I wanted access to Champ and Nascar (yeeehaw!) but you cant get both on the same subscription channels. I was not prepared to pay for both.
To really give these sports a chance they should be on a standard access channel –
UFC is really growing over here. it’s available a few days after the event in the USA.
We (I) would happily watch recorded highlights of the games – or a 3 or 4 hour best of the week show
These channels dont help themselves. I stay up regually to 2.00am watching Poker (sad I know) but more often just go to bed because I cant fucking stand watching shitty filler supermarket sweep or reruns of the weakest fucking link ergh!
Lets give these sports a chance put them where we can see them.

What a stupid post – I’m asking TV companies in the UK to show American sports.
And where do I ask? On the BBC website nope on a Las Vegas podcast.
I am so dumb – Anyway um I’ll get my hat.

Has anybody been to Macau? I am lucky enough to be looking forward to a nice Asian trip including a few days in Macau. What’s it like?

Ref: Show 33 and the Tropicana review: Hey lay off!
My Wife and I stayed there over the Memorial Weekend Week (after previous stays at the Aladin (twice) and one at the Luxor)
Heres my review: Checking in: slow. No, slower than slow.
Room (Island Tower) – Fine, Big enough, clean enough and of course the big selling point the mirrors that surround the bed (not just of the ceiling also on the wall!).
We had the best view from our room, Across to The Beach, The Pyramid, The Castle and the Sky Scrapers!
Position: Find me a better strip position for the price, so easy to get to the other properties.
The Pool area is very nice ( a few to many tattooed ladies!) with a great view through the trees to the sunshine.
The Spa is worth an early morning visit.
The garden cafe was the singular worst dining experience ever in Vegas (even worse than fat burger) with shitty staff and service and shittier food after that I was not going to try any of the other resturants in the place. But thats OK so many great places to eat in vegas.
The shops are lacking but better than comaparable properties.
The bars were very good service wise.
The Comedy Stop was actually brilliant value and the funniest show I have ever seen in Vegas, at one stage I was crying laughing!
Dirk Arthur I managed to avoid even with free tickets. The Folies show sucked quite a bit (except for the bouncy boobs!) the best bit was the comedy juggler he was quite funny!
And best of all I won on Video Poker and I won at Rapid Roulette, I was unsure about this ‘innovation’ of my favourite game but it’s actually much more relaxed, does not seem to attract the obnoxious fat cigar chomping types, also no need to joustle everybody else to lay bets.
The Titanic and Bodies shows are worth a visit (educational but not uplifting).
So that was the Trop – We would happily stay there again the average daily rate for the week was something like $80 – for us brits that is cheaper than we would pay for a night in a tent!
Vegas on a budget, sure. Where else could compete at those rates which wont cost a fortune in Taxi fares to get anywhere.

    I give it 3 Banannas

  9. RegularGuy
    July 30, 2007 | 10:19 pm

Just finished listening to the show. A few things about Beckham – he’s only 31, not mid-30s as you guys said. And he might not be the best player in the world or on his team (at least when he was with Real Madrid), but he’s an incredibly influential player. There’s a huge reason England recalled him and a huge reason that Real put him back in the lineup when they started losing ground in the title race.

When you sit and listen to the guy and examine what his career is about, you’ll realize how off-base it is to say he came here to be an actor. He’s a soccer player through and through and one who always plays with a chip on his shoulder. Barring catastrophic injury, he’ll be playing in two years – I have no doubt in my mind.

He isn’t here to save MLS because MLS doesn’t need saving. Soccer is successful in the U.S. It just isn’t as successful according to those people who don’t like it and think that it needs to be at the NFL’s level to be considered successful. MLS teams draw 12-20K, they are having stadiums built for them and more than a half-dozen cities (including Vegas) are up for the two expansions lots that will join in 2010. The league is healthy and doesn’t need a savior. It can always use a boost. but it doesn’t need a savior.

Lastly, I don’t know where Tommy got the info that English teams were doing such a number on MLS teams. Yeah, Chelsea beat the Galaxy, but the All-Stars and Chicago beat Celtic (a Scottish team) and Real Salt Lake beat Everton. Aston Villa did do a number on Toronto and Columbus, but the four teams in the SuperLiga were doing some outstanding work against Mexican teams in a tournament that features at $1M cash prize instead of playing these exhibition matches.

Probably more than you wanted to know, but there’s so much misinformation out there about the state of soccer in the U.S., I feel obligated to chime in. The sport has been doing fine for several years now and continues to grow on the professional level. Most of the people talking about it needing saving or not having success know nothing about the reality and are just afraid of how much market share it has gained in the past few years.

    Regular,
No idea what your talking about but I trust your knowledge. A work buddy who studies soccer for gambling purposes says the skill differential between the MLS and the play in Engalnd is obvious to anyone who knows the game.

The gambling handle in the U.S. is miserably low for soccer but certainly is improving. Some purists pretend handle and popularity have nothing to do with each other but I strongly disagree.

    July 30, 2007 | 11:01 pm

Also his wife is the actor. I said they are here to do the L.A. thing. That’s certainly not always about acting.

Perhaps you should listen twice to hear what is actually being said, but either way thanks for getting involved and your opinions are always appreciated.

    1. Yes, the talent level is higher, but I never mentioned that. You guys were saying soccer “hasn’t taken off at any level” (in your own words) or is “just not doing it” and that’s just total BS. There is a solid professional league turning out players who make the jump to Europe successfully as well as attracting outstanding talent from many countries. They have plenty of new owners coming in and building stadiums and have new TV and sponsorship deals that pay a lot of money. It is a success. You may base it on the gambling handle. I actually base it on what’s happening in the entire business.

    2. Check 29:02. “He and his gorgeous wife come to L.A. They want to be movie stars at this point. They are not interested in being soccer players as far as I’m concerned. That’s the real reason they are coming to the MLS.” That was you, Tommy. I believe this is what the kids call being owned.

I’ll now accept your apology for lecturing me for hearing exactly what you said as well as for getting his age wrong and everything else you have gotten wrong.

    July 31, 2007 | 1:13 am

    RG,
I don’t claim to get anything right about soccer much like the rest of non-hispanic America I care very little about it. I certainly will not apologize for your inability to understand the English language.

One more time SHE is the actor. I don’t think it’s a coincidence they ended up in L.A. They are now a celeb power couple and it has nothing to do with the MLS.

It’s Sammy Sosa all over again you hear what you want to hear and post accordingly to make your bogus argument.

By the way, I don’t still don’t care about this topic and completely defer to you on all kickball knowledge. This is what I deserve for discussing such a lame topic on the show.

  15. RegularGuy
    July 31, 2007 | 1:22 am

You said they, not her. And she’s a singer, not an actress. Once again, you say shit without thinking, then criticize those who actually analyze it. And the cherry on top is to bash the sport when you can’t even take time to understand or learn a little. Ignorance must be bliss.

Lastly, if you defer to me, that means I’m right, which I am by the way. So stop criticizing me for being right, especially when I’m willing to open my mind to any and all sports and not just a select few.

PS – Nolan Ryan’s years with the least walks were in the later years of his career. You really should try this Google thing before you express your thoughts. It’s a font of information. And I’ll keep bringing up Sosa just as long as you put a guy whose numbers can be seriously questioned due to roids, etc., at such a lofty peak.

  16. brian
    July 31, 2007 | 1:26 am

Not to pile on (even though that’s what I do best) but RG, if you’re basing the success of MLS by saying players make the jump to play in Europe, than you’re proving my point that we’re nothing but a minor league. I’d say you’ve been owned, but that’s really gay.

I thought she was here to do a reality show but that is something else I don’t know much about

Don’t know how long you have been listening but this show is not really about doing research. However, it certainly is about being open minded and that is why all sides of each argument are encouraged to be expressed.

What do Nolan Ryan’s walks at the end of his career have to do with anything. Did you hear what I said about Sosa? It seems you really love to argue because I think we’re in agreement about him.

Actually nevermind, don’t answer those questions because I really don’t want to carry on about stuff I care so little about. I feel some tension coming from you so I’m going quit this discussion and go home now.

Don’t overlook the NFL preseason for gambling opportunities. I felt the same way (a complete degenerate) when I first started playing preseason games but I have done much better preseason than regular season the last 2 years. The advantage generally lies in motivational factors (new coach, good backup quarterback, starters resting, etc.), rather than the relative strength of the teams. I certainly wouldn’t rely on the play of the teams regulars, I’m sure they couldn’t care less.

i don’t know much about the sport, but if the A’s ownership and Billy Beane are getting involved, there must be something good happening with soccer. The A’s owners just bought the San Jose Earthquakes and Billy Beane will be getting involved with the team. Also, one of the richest men in the world, Philip Anschutz, is the major force behind the MLS, so he has enough $$ to see things through and wait for the sport to grow. millions and millions of kids play soccer today and will grow into a large fan base.

I would rather watch the corn grow out my window than watch soccer, and I defintitely know more about corn than soccer, but I can offer some thoughts to help make soccer more popular in America:

    - have 10 players off the same team get arrested in the same year
    - have the most athletic guy in the league get arrested on a dog fighting scandal
    - have a steroid scandal
    - have a referee bet on games and get involved in the mafia
    - have Pele’s wife get a gambling addiction
    - have Beckham be seen in Vegas with an ugly stripper from Iowa
    - let the players jump into the stands and fight the fans

Basically, MLS needs some publicity- good or bad. It’s got little history in the US, and is not very marketable. It needs some popular American stars who can get their faces out there. The majority of the US population is white caucasian and didn’t grow up playing or watching the sport. I’m not saying it doesn’t have the potential to become popular, but it isn’t there right now and the majority of us just don’t give a crap about it. Can we go back to talking about hookers and brothels again?

Just checking but was that the All Sports show?

Ducth brings up the Hatton v Mayweather fight and all of a sudden it’s an indepth discussion on whether or not the Spice Girls are hot! I know BMo isn’t a fan of the pugilistic arts, but come on.

I do look forward to a fuller run down once the specifics of the fight have been finalised, that or a 15 minute slot on why BMo’s favourite was Sporty Spice (cause he figured no one else liked her, so he stood a chance).

  28. English Bob
    July 31, 2007 | 4:15 am

Actually I have a Vegas sports question, well a couple.

The last Hatton fight was in the Thomas & Mack Centre, but I’ve only ever seen fights at the MGM and Ceasars. What’s the Thomas & Mack Centre like for fights? And how easy is it to get there and back if you’re staying on the strip? Or is it easier to go to Hard Rock? as I think the centre is also on Harmon.

    July 31, 2007 | 4:46 am

That sad thing is you’re exactly right on the Spice Girls take EB. As for Thomas and Mack. it’s a great venue, but it’s definitely a problem getting out of there when it’s packed out. My wife’s uncles went to the last Hatton fight and they said the line to get a cab was at least 2 hours long, and getting out of the parking lot for people that drove was backed up as well. They ended up paying a limo driver $60 to drive them 2 blocks to their hotel and said it was well worth it. It’s possible to walk to the Hard Rock, but not exactly the best neighborhood.

Wow you go to bed and it all kicks off.
Regular Guy and Dutch throw down and when Dutch fails to dig himself out of the hole BMo omes in swinging.
    Nice one regular guy!
Since when did a reality show involve acting? REALITY (all though we know it’s almost certainly a scripted piece of shit watched by the same retards that believe WWE is real!)
Posh cant sing or act – The Spice Girls show will use special electronics to correct thier rotten singing on the fly before it blats out of the speakers. (FACT)
Roland Rat fucking rocks – But Green Gilbert was the best.
And Dutch I also heard it as they were both here to act.
If the games are getting average of 12 – 20 thousand crowds all it has to do is hang on in there for a few years and that will grow.
Betting wise, here in the UK betting on Football (Soccer) is very big business, so there is no reason why it should not work in Vegas once the sports book people understand more of the game.

  34. English Bob
    July 31, 2007 | 6:14 am

    Hawkeye Brad,

Strangely most of the things you’ve listed have sort of already happened:

    - have the most athletic guy in the league get arrested on a dog fighting scandal: Stan Collymore – only it wasn’t dog fighting it was just plain dogging

    - have a steroid scandal: It tends to be more the recreational drugs, but has lead to players being sacked and banned – Adrian Mutu springs to mind, but Rio Ferdinand was suspended from games for missing a random drugs test

    - have a referee bet on games and get involved in the mafia: Players have been accussed several times, but it’s far east betting syndicates rather than the mafia

    - have Beckham be seen in Vegas with an ugly stripper from Iowa: It’s more likely to be his new PA, he has history there (just type Rebecca Loos into Google)

    - let the players jump into the stands and fight the fans: If a flying kick into the crowd counts, that’s been done. Google can supply a nice little video if you use Cantona Kung Fu Kick as your search. I’ll avoid the whole football hooligan thing as hopefully that’s all in the past

All we need now is for 10 players to be arrested in the same year and for some one to check the bank account of Pele’s wife.

BTW, did you know Pele used to do adverts for Viagra?

  35. AceRockollaUK
    July 31, 2007 | 9:09 am

Beckham being seen in Vegas with an ugly stripper would be a step up from the ugly wife.

  36. RegularGuy
    July 31, 2007 | 10:03 am

BMo – She did one show. It did not get picked up as a series and was only ever scheduled as a six-show mini-series. And we have had success at guys making the jump – McBride, Bocanegra, Dempsey, Keller, Friedel, Cherundolo. Not everyone, but guys have made it over there. It’s not uncommon. Hell, Eddie Johnson just turned down a deal to wait for a better one.

And I’m sorry, but if Dutch says something stupid, then denies saying something stupid, I’m gonna call him on it. TD really needs to lighten up and realize that it’s OK to say he misspoke or (gasp) might be wrong about something. There’s no tension here, just fun watching you squirm without admitting that maybe you don’t know everything about everything.

Rock on, mofobes. I forgot to post to you again about Oliver Tse. Basically, he did what Dutch was doing – talked out his you know what a lot, but he was a real, real jackass about it.

BMO/Dutch – Just curious – what exactly is it you guys do for a job??? Whatever it is sounds pretty cool.

Patch – poop story for ya….

This one time I was having a big party at my place and I was in the backyard partaking in a distance pissing competition.

Distance pissing is where you stand in a line and the guy who can make the longest arc of piss is declared Mayor of Distance Piss City. The theory is the same as getting more pressure from a hose – you squeeze the eye baby and once well practiced you would be surprised how far you can actually propel said arc.

The ultimate is arcing so big that the girls can ‘run the gauntlet’ under it.

Anyway, back to the poop. As you can imagine, pushing out urine with such force puts a lot of strain on other parts of the body – on this particular occasion it resulted in not only brown crayons drawing on my undies but an actual nugget deposited. All good and fixed after a quick dash to the actual toilet.

A side note – I unfortunatley was not declared Mayor on that night due to disqualification.

Make of this story what you will, but do know that many cans of lager and several shots of Absolut have driven men to far far worse…

Nice effort to save the board pmac – but I’m with patch – might be the worst message board in the history of the show. But I’ll tip my cap.

I’m one of those middle aged Americans who never played soccer – but I have discovered one thing I find more boring that watching soccer. Reading about it.

I’ll check in after tomorrow’s show – and we can discuss the sudden disappearance of fyregirl, the pheonmenal Crossroads Concert I saw over the weekend, Chicago Cabbies threatening to go on strike for a rate increase and, get this, THEY WANT TO GET LESS TRAFFIC TICKETS. If we cover that we can talk about my upcoming trip to Vegas to meet the isle of Man(though they may be avoiding me), the simple pleasure that is roadside corn on the cob in July and August, and fantasy football draft strategies.

In the mean time – I’ve got some paint to watch dry.

    Trainfan – Checking Out.

I would usually leave any detailed sports commentary to the US listeners having growing up with their sports but i had to say something about Pippen being overated. As a kid growing up in Sydney I watched every NBA game i could find with Pippen and the Bulls and i thought Scottie was one of the best multi dimensional forwards to ever play the game. He may have not been an individual ball hog scorer, although he did step up to the plate when he had too, but he he impacted his teams in so many ways. Just look at his stats:

    Six-time NBA World Champion (1991, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997 and 1998)
Name is scattered across the NBA’s all-time leader board: 40th in total points (18,940), fourth in steals (2,307), tied for 16th in steals per game (1.96), 23rd in assists (6,135), 13th in minutes (41,069), 16th in minutes per game (34.9), 32nd in three-point field goals made (978)
Participated in postseason play in 16 of his 17 NBA seasons, making the playoffs in each of his first 16 seasons
Second in NBA history with 208 playoff appearances (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, 237)
All time playoff leader in steals
2nd in 3 points made in playoffs

When MJ 1st retired (before the 93-94 season) Pippen lead the Bulls to 55 wins only 2 less then the previous year with Jordan! The 93-94 season, Pippen should have won the championship without Jordan, a late foul call against him in the 2nd round series vs the Knicks cost the them the series and there is no question they would have beat the Rockets. He averaged 22 points, 8.7 rebounds, 5.6 assists with a FG percentage of 49.1% during that season! Also during the All Star game which was Jordan less he took away All Star MVP honours with 44 points scored.

Also if you want to judge a player purely on points scored, well he is 40th all time! Tommy after all your Baseball judgments on one dimensional players in th MLB then you have to be with me with Pippen. Pippen always received and relished the hardest defensive assignment so Jordan could be freed up to score. Pippen was legendary for his defensive skills and hence all defensive team 91-00′. Who shut down Magic in the Bulls first championship? He was the Bulls playmaker running the triangle offense and freeing up good looks at the basket for everyone, not just Jordan. And how many times did you see those long arms poke a ball away from the oncoming point guard only to see Pippen end up tomahawking a dunk down the other end of the court!

And what an exciting player, you guys in the states must have seen thousands of highlight reels of Pippen making incredible moves, not too mention one of his most famous dunks over Patrick Ewing where it appears his so high he is straddling Ewing.

In my eyes he was truly a gifted multi talented player who deserves to be in the NBA’s top 50 as one of the best denfensive small forwards to play the game. With not only great stats but an intangible prescence to the game that can never be measured by points alone.

    I agree with you patch.

Also, just a send a link to the web page your plagiarizing instead of copying and pasting the whole article into the message board.

For example post #43 could be shortened by

Trainfan – go back to reading your books – I like football (soccer) and wish you could be more open minded. There is a reason it’s the worlds number one sport and it’s ain’t cus it’s boring to watch!!!!
The reason American sports by and large are only popular in America is because they are games for people with A.D.D. and I guess the US is full of ADD suffers.
Any action sport that lasts longer than 5 seconds a move is difficult for you guys to watch.
The reason NASCAR survives is because it lasts for hours and therefore taking a ten minute break to get more food and drink for your ample asses wont really mean you miss much.
Dont even think about starting on Cricket – Nobody in the UK watches it, It sounds to me as though the LAs Vegas 51′ers get the same crowd, it’s a place to go and drink without the wife, while people play sport around you that you don’t care about.

Neteller pays! The money showed up in my back account this morning. Kind of like finding some cash in pants you haven’t worn a few months.

I’ll be on the next flight.

patch, trainfan: thanks for saving the board!!!

I’m of Italian descent and even that’s not enough for me to really enjoy soccer. BMo and TD got it right: hockey’s tops up here!

I have something totally different that I want to vent about: Formula 1.

Anyone interested can check out http://www.autosport.com for the latest on this massive espionage situation that has affected two of the largest teams, i.e. McLaren and F1. Reading like a true soap opera, it seems one disgruntled dude from Ferrari gave his amigo at McLaren 780 confidential pages of technical data. Fast forward a couple of months (to skip over the car chases and sabotage attempts) and the governing board that runs F1 (the FIA) have decided that McLaren are guilty of breaking some serious regulation.

Then they decide no punishment is warranted… I thought there was enough drama in soccer with all the faking and diving that goes on, but apparently the world’s top open wheel racing league had to compete at their level.

A big thumbs down to soccer and, sigh, my beloved F1.
