This is how you tell that you’re a grad student. First, you go “How the hell did NMSU (enter your school here) get into the tournament?” (paying so little to on-campus stuff and stuff that the undergrads know about such as the school actually winning the WAC tourney and getting the autobid) and then you go “Can I use this as an excuse to get out of working that day?” They ain’t making it past Texas anyway.

  3. asterion says:

That should be “so little attention”, of course.

I’ve just finished an absolute “must read” for any true sports bettor or gambler for that matter, The Smart Money by Michael Konick. You may recognize him from the Poker Superstars events and other gambling writings. He’s basically written his memoir detailing several seasons of sports betting primarily as a beard for the Rick Matthew syndicate, the most feared and succesful sports bettor in history. You really get a flavor for how lines move based on big sports betting factions and how pathetic Vegas truely is…in that the casinos/bookmakers only want your money if they feel you’re going to lose. I think these guys have been kicked out of more casinos that the big blackjack teams. You’ll learn so much insight into the subtle and often silly rules of the Vegas sportsbooks after reading this ie no cell phones, betting limits, line moves. Highly recommeded. I’ll give it FIVE CUT DOWN NETS of a potential Five.

Speaking of Weber State..I visited that campus and UNLV both in 1990..Talk about birds of a feather! I believe Weber** had more NCAA basketball recruiting violations than the Houston Cougs(#2)at the time.

    Of course most of us have heard of the Runnin Rebs with Larry Johnson ,Elmore Spencer, Stacey Augmon,Greg Anthony;
but who remembers them losing to the Tarheels in the final Four?{Reggie Theus & Glen Gondrezick vs Walter Davis & Phil Ford}..?

PS: **Don’t go to Ogden,UT if you’re addicted to caffeine!

In His Element. Phenomenal Breakdowns – tons of knowledge.

    Great Job.

  8. Dutch says:

unbelievable! Jim Rome interviewed Bruce Pearl (Tennesse Head Coach) today and the coach jokingly said “play the over” in the UT-Long Beach game. He said they want to press and really create an up-tempo game. Vegas responded by moving the number from 163 to 170. We shall see what the NCAA thinks about all this.

Trying to get all of the NBA out of my system before Thursday.

My play for Monday: Dallas -8 over Golden State

No need to go into a big analysis tirade here, in fact, I’m going to do it Frankenstein style. Mavericks good, Warriors bad.

    Record: 28-16-2

  10. Steve says:

Just as an FYI as of now we have 27 entrants into the bracket challenge, great showing!

I just wanted to put this out there… every year I fill out these things and I never know anything about College Basketball haha but hey-it’s free! Good luck all!

  11. Slashdogx says:

I am more of a football follower than BBall, but this was a well done episode. I am now looking forward to the tournament much more than I was. Nice job men.

What’s that Frankenstein? You have another comment?

Mavericks blow, Brian on murderous rampage

  13. Straight Outta Fennville says:

I heard that too Dutch. The Clones are everywhere!

Great breakdown of games. I enjoyed this one even more than the bowl show. TDutch in his element.

Illinois set to make a run. They will be the emergent 12th seed and then remind their mid major in-state brother who the King of the FIBs is.

  14. devildog says:

Brian-“Warriors Bad”-thats what the pundits said after the 60-22 Washington Bullets knocked off the defending Celtics in ’75,then met them in the finals..

Result.. Germany 4 The Allies ‘Nil’

  15. devildog says:

    Germany 4the Allies “Nil’..

A little “Victory ” reference there.. probably the only time that Sylvester Stallone and Michael Caine co-starred in a movie..

A little bonus NIT play before we get serious Thursday. It’s looking like I’ll have either 10 or 11 plays in the first round. Tonight the dissapointed Drexel Dragons get N.C. St. at home. Usually I like to fade bubble teams in the first round of the NIT but I think Drexel gets it done tonight. Drexel has been a fantastic road team but has also been very good at home. They start 3 seniors and have been a consistant squad all year long. This play is really against N.C. St. who has played 4 of the last 5 days in an intense ACC tournament. They only really play 7 guys and they left it all on the floor in St. Petersburg. The Pack hasn’t been any good on the road all year and I just don’t see how they can get up for the NIT against a very good Drexel team.

    Play is Drexel -5.5

    Record 24-11-2

all i can say is WOW, dutch. now we know what has been taking up all the space in your brain where technology issues might reside. college basketball has taken up all usable space. i am amazed at how much you and bmo know about all these teams. i think a monkey could have made better and more educated picks than i made.

  20. brian says:

Play for Tuesday: Minnesota -6 over Indiana

So I got burned betting into a winning streak yesterday, so now I’ll test a losing streak. The Pacers have lost 9 in a row and only covered 1 of 10. The last road game I saw them play was against the Clippers and Indiana almost set a new record for lowest point total. They’re debuting yet another starting line up tonight, so my play isn’t so much for the T-Wolves as it is against the Pacers.

Wow, a show where Tommy said a hell of a lot more than Brian. Could this be a sign of things to come with the role reversal? Will the next show involve a bitter Brian broadcasting via his cellphone?

I was enjoying Tommy’s analysis of the brackets, but everytime he was on a roll disecting a match-up… Brian jumped in with a “OKAY, let’s move on now” and cut-off Dutch’s flow…

In the future Brian, when DJ Dutch is spinning gold, you let nature take it’s course.

  23. cb says:

Holy shit the bed, batman! Brian was definitely the wonder boy sidekick of Tommy this week. I’m unabashedly using Tommy’s picks for my office pool.

  24. Dirty Carmelo says:

    Sup Guys,
I think you 2 are by far the best at the whole sports betting ordeal. I personally made some cash listening to TDawg’s choices over the other 2 “Professional” handicappers.

I was quite impressed by all the college basketball info and tidbits that you 2 have. I haven’t followed CBB this year but after listening to your podcast, i feel like I know it all… I think my college bracket is going to be tough to not win.

Keep up the good work and one of these days I’ll have a poker rant for ya guys…

I have one more sweep of the casinos left in me but right now I have the following tickets in my pocket. Props to the Stratosphere for showing courage with the numbers.

Thursday’s plays in order of importance.

    Indiana -1
    Louisville -5.5
    Old Dominion +2
    Xavier -1.5
    V.C.U. +7
    Davidson +8

  26. devildog says:

I like Oral Roberts +6.5 (I’d take them outright).

  27. Straight Outta Fennville says:

I am setting up shop this weekend at the Montecito’s sports book. An ex-Marine buddy of mine works there. My host Samantha Jane says she listens to the show religiously while she and Mary McConnell paint each others’ toenails. I can’t seem to get a hold of her though and no one at the place has seen her. Oh well, I am sure she will show up in time to make sure my favorite suite that overlooks the Palms to the north and the Mirage and Venetian to the south is all ready for me. By the way, I got a reservation for 20 at Wolfgang Puck’s tomorrow night at 7. How about the This Ain’t Iowa crew all meet up? I am buying.

  28. brian says:

Let’s get 4 days of ignoring my family and responsibilities started a few of my picks overlap TD’s (which is probably a good thing)

Great pick on VCU Tommy, played it on all of my brackets. Also included it in a little parlay. Thanks for the info guys, paying off well so far.

  37. Trainfan John says:

Well – I know it’s early and the first round games don’t mean that much point wise – but DAMN it feels great to get out of day one with no losses on my bracket. I’ve been filling out these things for 25 years and I don’t think I ever did that before.

  38. Raisin_Bran says:

hit a 6 team parlay, woohoo!!!! wish I bet more than 5 bucks though, lol….

  39. Straight Outta Fennville says:

Enjoy it now Trainfan! I refuse to lose to a dude who publically expresses his joy for Mai Tais. Did you put an umbrella in your bracket?
