Can someone help me understand how legalized sports gambling would have stopped the ref? If a group of bettors has a position on a game – what’s to stop them from getting to a ref – regardless if it’s a legal casino or a bookie who is taking their action?
Wouldn’t necessarily have stopped the ref from gambling or fixing games, but it would have kept the fucking MAFIA out of professional basketball.

As soon as a number starts to deviate from the norm highly trained eyes recognize it. Fixes can certainly get by them but not with regularity. Of all the scandals I’m aware of only Arizona State had direct Vegas ties and it was recognized and discovered quickly.

Trainfan, you will actually be about 30miles west of my hometown of Clear Lake. I will be up there Thurs/Fri if, God forbid, you’re still up there until the end of the week. There’s really nothing worth exploring where your will be at. Britt hosts “National Hobo Days” festival in a couple weeks which would be interesting. Livermore is the hometown of Indianapolis Colts TE Dallas Clark. There are a couple new casinos, but still dives, in the area where you could get in touch with your inner degenerate. Otherwise, the highlight of North Iowa would be Clear Lake. You could catch a concert at the Surf Ballroom, which is where Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper performed their last concert before crashing their plane in a cornfield a couple miles north of town. North Iowa also boasts that we have “the richest soil in the world”. Just some thoughts to keep you busy. Enjoy your trip! I hope you like corn.

Sorry everyone i’m a little behind. About tipping . . . I think that these bars and restaurants in vegas are hurting their employees with the prices that are being charged. When it’s $7 for a beer and $11 for a mixed drink, people are leaving less. And also, sorry dutch 20% is for good service. I have no issue leaving 25% is we get great service, but if the service sucks, i have no issue leaving 10%. I think that the staff thinks that it’s like a salary and 20% is expected and they don’t work hard enough for it. I’m in sales, if i do a shitty job, i don’t make money and i think it should be the same for those people.

OK so I’m very late to the party and am having to stay after school listening to past podcasts to catch up – I have reached 69 So far and it hurts.
Obviously the American sports side leaves me fairly cold as I dont know what the F you are talking about, all I know is that if you have to invent a new game to be world champions you will and when real games come along you bitches all run screaming and talk some shit about a game that can finish is a draw being boring (Oh and by the way it’s called Football not fuckin’ Soccer) and there is only one game of football – your boys are playing a girly game of Rugby but with lots of padding and only 2 seconds of action at a time as you all need to stop for a TV ad or some more food! – The only football in that game is a specialist who comes on and kicks the ball before going off again and sitting on his throne!
I love Vegas and your Podcasts but your sports are funny! – Football is boring (so you say) yet basketball which is a game where the winner is decided by when the umpire decides to blow his whistle is exciting – It’s a game for freaky tall kids – thats all! – Blow the whistle after 10 minutes game ends 22-24 – after 20 minutes 46 – 48 and on and on – wow thats exciting a game that is so difficult to score in that games finish with 100+ points almost all the time. Baseball rocks except what’s the use of a game where the season runs to about 6000 games per team – So losing loads of them is no big deal.

I have to admit that when Tommy uttered the phrase, “Nolan Ryan did wear a baseball jersey” part of my soul died that day.
He’s certainly my all time favorite player. It seems a litte strange to me that Tommy makes the argument that he was just a fantastic strikeout pitcher. If you get an out with virutally no chance of putting a runner on base (with the rare exception of the swung on third strike passed ball) and no chance of advancing a runner in contrast to what may happen if a batter grounds out or flies out, why is this considered negative? Granted it may take more pitches, but Nolan threw like a beast for TWENTY SEVEN seasons.
Nolan was virtually unhitable. He is the strikeout king. He also is the all time leader in NO HITTERS. He is also tied for the all time lead in ONE hitters. This guy could go the distance time and time again.
Granted he walked a lot of dudes. Lots of homerun hitters fan a lot as well. Mark one down in the con column. His winning percentage was lackluster, granted. However, he played for a variety of miserable teams. What kind of run support did he receive? What was Barry Sanders’ “winning percentage”? Is he overrated? Many amazing players in many sports unfortunately have to wallow on pathetic teams and we never get to see team in playoff situations or truly shine if they were on dynasty teams.
One final argument that should SEAL the deal and put the label back on Cal. Tommy do you remember August 4, 1993? Well that’s the day that one douchebag named Robin Ventura thought he would charge the mound which was occupied by Nolan Ryan. Nolan put him in a headlock and delivered SIX of the most beautiful RIGHT hands straight to the grill of the White Sox pretty boy. CHECKMATE. Come on man…if you’re a Cubs man, you gotta put the curse back on Cal.

Ryan had a great fastball, nasty curve, but wasn’t a great pitcher. Remember that strike outs are nice and look good. Have no impact on runs or wins.
