Welcome to our super bowl wrap up. Who won, who lost and who got wasted thanks to SlashdogX. Catch up with all the goings on at the website. Almost forgot about our update on the priest on the run.
Vegas off the strip recommendations for this week are all about the ladies. A bit off shopping and a bit of pampering, while you do a bit of gambling.
MGM Grand is this weeks review casino. It’s huge… It’s huge… It’s huge… Maybe you should checkout the shops while your there, we are not sure where it is, but feel free to enlighten us. So how many Go Go dance does the Grand get?

JUSTICE..VEGAS STYLE!!
Glad to hear that Father George was finally caught. Sad to hear about the Lions being so confined.Maybe he should be tossed in with them!?!..Great Head-liner, especailly for “Ceasar’s” Palace.
Post of the week, eh? I’m not sure if that moves me up or down the lameness scale for pickup lines. But I appreciate the shout out – after watching my Bears yesterday, I’m taking every glimmer of good news that I can find.
As for a happier topic – I’m vegas bound again in 3 weeks. And, while like Slashdog, I too am your elder, I would gladly buy each of you a brew or two. I was thinking of the Isla bar at TI where we can have Augie the barkeep mix up a few of her special Mai Tais on a Sunday afternoon – but after hearing what a pussy drinker Brian is – we might have to see how she does mixing Shirley Temples.
Here’s a story for my THIS AIN’T NORTH DAKOTA my Atlantic City podcast COMING SOON.
http://www.comcast.net/news/strange/index.jsp?cat=STRANGE&fn=/2007/02/05/578915.html&cvqh=itn_gamblerbirth
Patch – I thought sure as shit that the story was going to have something about her not wanting to stop playing while giving birth – so I’m a little disasppointed.
yeah that would have been really tight….at least she was at the penny slots.
Ok – I’m going to actually do some work here in a little bit – but first I just saw this on Tommy’s Bio page:
“He has also driven a taxi, attempted stand-up comedy and is a graduate of professional baseball umpiring school.”
Umpire School!! And you are trying to pick up chicks by telling them you do a podcast. There would have to be so many lines you could come up with around umpiring –
“If I put on my Chest Protector can I round your bases?”
“I’ve got the balls and the bat. Wanna play?”
“I’m an umpire – are you a switch hitter?”
I’m guessing the board can come up with several hundred more to help out our good buddy Tommy Dutch.
I’ve got to get to work now.
A surly Rickles sighting evidentally isn’t a rare event, a partner of mine saw his “show” in the not so remote past. He noted that he literally FELL DOWN and told the exact same joke twice. My buddy mentioned that he wasn’t sure if he was actually stroking out or just wasted. He actually had to be escorted off the stage and the performance was cut short.
Also, I’d say that the pokerroom at the MGM is top notch. Very nice and comfortable with a great signup system. I really like NL ca$h games and one thing I don’t like is that they cap their 1/2 game at $200. The game is super loose and this cap is too low. I like the cap in general, but I prefer the $500 that’s the standard at Caesar’s for the 1/2 structure. With the 2 huney cap you need to bring a few bullets and be ready to reload.
Finnish version of Al Michaels…well, there is a famous hockey announcer named Raimo here. For the little bit of Finnish I speak/understand, I can still tell that he sucks.
We had a little party here with about 10 folks, mostly exchange students. Trying to explain the no-huddle offense and pass interference to the kid from China was, well, interesting. That, and trying to clean up all the beer cans at school at 5am so class could start at 8. Brilliant.
It appears that T-Dutch and B-Mo aren’t willing to take up the requests of the listeners and do that Pahrump cathouse tour guide. I’m really disappointed. I was under the impression that this podcast was all about the listeners. I’d have loved to hear the ratings out there.
Speaking of ratings, how are you going to rate the casinos when you do the reviews of Downtown? 1-5 Grumpies?
I can understand why a married man wouldn’t want to hang a review of the afore-mentioned establishment out on the net.
Anyway.. I’m going to really go out on a limb, and pick a side.
Northern Iowa Panthers -4.5
(three straight 20 win seasons..solid program.)
I whole heartedly accept your offer to meet up Trainfan, but I insist those Shirley Temples be virgin…which is pretty much just 7up…and will probably still get me tipsy.
damn Brian – you are a puss. A Virgin Shirely Temple.
I think that your whole, “as a hetrosexual male with no children, I’d never consider the Wizard of Oz attraction at the MGM” is getting more and more difficult to believe.
you’ve got a Judy Garland poster, dont you?
I’m not the one who just pulled the name “Judy Garland” out of his arsenal.
My theory why poker rooms are always near the sports book?
1)Poker players need to be near the bathroom for those quick runs between hands (somehow that didn’t come out right)………
2) Most poker players are even worse sports bettor (anyone remember Stuey Ungar?). If we can’t make money on the rake, let’s make it on the Vig!
3)Most poker players are also compulsive craps players too… but who wants to see some grumpy old poker player sitting near a craps table (would totally ruin the energy).
Thanks for adding something into the show for the ladies. I hate to break it to you, but I’m not sure it was enough to balance out all of the bathroom humor that’s been keeping the ladies away. (Or, so I assume.)
I loved patch’s AC story. Legend has it that my mom went into labor with my sister in Atlantic City while throwing craps. She could barely lean over the table with her big pregnant belly! However, thankfully, she gave birth in a hospital, and not on the oh so sterile casino carpet.
Great show guys!
It’s good to know that gambling won’t be out of the question when my wife is 9 months pregnant
“I’m not the one who just pulled the name “Judy Garland†out of his arsenal.”
BURN!
Loved the show guys…. My audio comment is going to be taped in a few minutes……. let me grab another beer lol

My ratings tell me Georgia Tech will beat N.C. St. by 12 and this is an obvious spot for a Wolfpack letdown following their emotional upset win over arch rival North Carolina. The number opened 9.5 and was quickly bet up to 10 by the wise guys. Everything is saying bet G.T. but I’m firmly on the other side. My numbers are based on N.C. St. playing not at full strength. They now have Sr. PG Engin Atsur back in the line-up to go with guys who can obviosly score (Grant, Costner, McCauley, Fells) I don’t think their wins over Va Tech and UNC were a fluke and I think this team will be very strong down the stretch in the ACC. Ga Tech is very young and very athletic but has not really been the same since losing arguably their best offensive player in Lewis Clinch. I think this game goes down to the wire and could even see the Pack stealing one late.
Play is N.C. St +10 just bought the ticket at Coast Casinos
Wow! This board is rediculous, KGB is teaching the no huddle offense to kids from China and it’s only a small favorite to make the show
It takes a big man to admit he shops in Vegas. We went freaking nuts at both outlet malls last June. Loaded up at Timberland, Tommy Hilfiger, and a bunch of other stuff. The downtown mall off of Charleston is a little nicer, plus after a June afternoon sucks every drop of fluid out of your body you are only a few blocks away from 99 cent drinks on Fremont St. The mall on the way to the South Point isn’t as nice but they have this store way in the back that is cheaper than the drinks in Mollica’s favorite mall.
MGM and Caesars are both way, way too big for me. You just feel overwhelmed. Give me the Hard Rock or the Silverton.
I hear there is an Orvis store out there!?..If anyone knows where abouts, let me know, thanks.
Damn,Tommy that’s a lot of homework..obviously it’s paying off.
Do you use trends as well?
I don’t think there is an Orvis, but the guys at the Bass Pro Shops at the Silverton are great to talk fishing with, especially in their designated fly fishing area. The store is nowhere the showplace that the original in Springfield, MO is but is sure a nice ammenity to a casino. Win enough at the tables, you might be able to justify a $1200 Sage fly rod.
Thanks Fennville,I think I have as much chance at the tables right now as matching up numbers on a powerball ticket.
Here is my pick..
VIRGINIA–MARYLAND +155.5 (OVER)
Sir Charles Barkley..compulsive gambler?!
I’m sure most of you have seen this story by now. Bascically, it was reported that he won $700K at the black-jack tables, and craps(?) So anyway..I was watching the haltime show of the Celtics game, and Donnie
Marshall (former Celtic and UConn Huskie)said he saw him lose $750k over 3 days in Vegas(1998-99)-ouch!
Gotta love Barkley. I love that unlike Jordan, Barkley could care less about his gambling problem.
Speaking of gambling problems, Tommy Dutch eked out another college bball winner tonight. His picks are on fire, but watching the games are not for the faint of heart.
Wow, what a way to win a bet Tommy. I’m anxiously waiting your next pick!!! any money on the big NC-Duke game?
Check out espn.com scoreboard..
“Final”–> Missouri St-37 Illinois St-25
(wish I’d grabbed the under on that one!)
Chuck told Rome that he has lost about 10 million over the past few years. Sir Charles still has John Daley to make him feel good about himself. JD is a dude with a problem…but JD has lots of problems.
Where is all this Global Warming now? You guys were whining when it hit 34 degrees like Celine Deion after Harrah’s told the world her old man plays a million a week. It is -5 here down the road from Tommy’s homeland and has been for days and days. You enjoy driving down the street Tommy with your windows down. At least I have only had to work 3 days a week lately thanks to all of this crap.
Degenerate Diary 2/7/2007 3:53 A.M. record 12-4-1
Two Big Ten plays today:
Illinois has a better coach and better athletes than Northwestern. The Illini are obviously not the same team we have seen the past few years but have come out focused in the games they should win. I’m concerned that Chester Frazier is questionable and I know Northwestern plays very frustrating defense. However, the fact remains Illinois will have better players making better decisions with the basketball which should be enough to overcome a 4 pt spread and the Wildcats modest home court advantage.
Minnesota should get an emotional lift as big man Spencer Tollackson will return to the court in a limited role. The Gophers can shoot the 3 ball and are usually tough at home. That being said, these are not the usual Gophers. The attitude in Minneapolis is lets get this season over with and start the rebuilding process. I was down on Iowa and Steve Alford in December but this team continues to improve in traditional Alford form. They have been getting excellent guard play from Haluska, Freeman and Henderson, their big men are adequate and Smith and Tate give them a jolt of athleticism.
Plays for the day are Illinois -4 and Iowa -3
Summary…this “is” Iowa,but it ain’t Minnesota..
I’m going with 2 Big East games tonight…
georgetown–louisville +121.5 (over)
rutgers–marquette +127.5 (over)
I feel obligated to make a pick in the “big game”.
I’m taking Roy’s Boys -4.5,
Breathe if you hate Duke!
Alright, I’m gonna try this Tommy Dutch style. My play for Wed. night is the UNDER of 217.5 in the Memphis/Dallas NBA game. I know what the Mavs can do, I’m just skeptical that Grizz can hold up their end of the bargain.
I’m taking the OVER of 66.5 minutes for Friday’s Podcast – it’s going to take nearly that long just to talk about the message board – nevermind the Tropicana, Tommy’s Big date and the rest.
TD and Brian – Thanks for taking the time to meet up at the Hilton prior to the Super Bowl. It was a pleasure having a couple of beers with you both and nice to find you as interesting and pleasant to talk to in person as you seem on the ‘air’. We all enjoyed talking to you. Brian, it was also nice to meet your lovely wife, albeit briefly, prior to her making a killing at the poker table. Thanks again for making the effort.
Thanks also for the shout out on the show. Well, except for the part about disclosing that we are a bunch of old ‘geezers’. We will keep doing what we can before we end up in Doyle Brunson style scooters.
I see Trainfan (btw, is that as in ‘Meet Virginia” Train. “Union Pacific” Train, or other) also picked up on that comment and included a proactive confession that he too is probably on the north side of you anticipated age demographic.
Congratulations to both of you on your recent wagering successes. Brian, your extensive research on the passing yards odd/even probabilities paid off! You will be glad to know that my prop bet of “Number of Bears TDs under Number of Goals in the Manchester United vs. Tottenham match” also panned out. I was probably just coat-tailing on your karma though.
KGB, congratulations on the Colts win. Anyone teaching in Finland (or anywhere for that matter) deserves a championship every now and then.
I just returned from my Vegas trip and have a couple of stray thoughts for the other posters amusement:
* I talked to a guy Monday that showed me two discarded bet tickets that he found on the floor while waiting to cash his bets Sunday at Red Rock. One was for 55,000 on the over. Can you imagine what was going through his mind when Tony and Payton were lining up on 4th down at the end of the game rather that kicking the FG. The second was for 5,000 that the first play from scrimmage was a completed pass to M. Harrison. I can imagine making the bet (or at least imagine Mollica making that bet), but not for 5 grand. Unbelievable. To think I was sweating my small bet and cursing the fact that I had let the spread get down to 48.5.
* We stopped at the Rainbow Bar and Grill Monday night. It is owned by a former Atlantic records exec and is an offshot of the original in LA. It was a bit dead, but seemed like a cool place. We talked to the hostess and found out that Forienger had played a small show there Friday and it was not uncommon for bands to have after-parties there when they were in Vegas. It is a pretty small place. Anyway, she said that the lead singer (not the original, although most of the other members of the band are) was hitting on her and she seemed to still be a bit creeped out about it. I thought I should pass this on in case TDutch, defender of rights of capitive lions and unaccompionied teenage girls walking in suburbia, had room for another cause – protector of young hostesses being hit on by 50-something former rock stars.

It ain’t Iowa, but it ain’t Minnesota, and it definitely ain’t Finland either. As I stare out my window this morning and see the bank clock telling me it is -34, I’m not exactly inspired to go out and solve all the world’s problems. When I tell the locals how schools and businesses in the US Midwest are closing due to the cold, they laughed heartily and said something to the effect of “put on a sweater”.
Seriously though, do you know how hard it is to pinch a loaf with icicles hanging from your sphincter? It is definitely more Joe Theismann than Ray Guy.
Theisman,Guy…how about some love for Dave Jennings?
Slash – its Train as in “Meet Virginia” – but before everyone starts piling on – I’d like to explain.
I first saw them play in San Franciso in 1994 – well before ANYONE knew who they were – and along with Meet Virginia they had some pretty good songs, the best of which is “Free”. They also did a wicked cover of “ramble on”. Saw them at Summerfest in Milwaukee one year with about 9 other people at 1PM on a Wed. Afternoon. Saw them at a small bar in Chicago.
Anyhow – when I signed up for hotmail in the late ninties – I needed a name and that was it – figured it would give me a good way to talk about this band that no one know about. Little did I know anyone would ever really hear of them – or – much to my dismay – that they would ever do a song as terrible as “Cab”.
So now it seems too late to change it. But I guess I could go for the shorter explaination and just say, “as in Union Pacific” and leave it at that.
Here’s something for the Not Iowa segment:
The guy wins 18 million playing PENNY slots and they start the article by interviewing the owner of the PAWN shop across the street where the guy had pawned of a saw!
And they hope that this will put Pahrump on the map for something other than the cathouses.
If I could get a damn saw on an airplane I’d be there in a new york minute.

Trainfan,
Maybe I should change my name to VervepipeFan. I go back to those guys as long as you do Train. Saw them in the early ’90s playing the quad of the quaint little college I went to here in Michigan. Of course, unlike Train most people remember very little about the Verve Pipe unless they are in their 30′s and from Michigan. They did have one national record with lots of over-produced poppy versions of some of their classics like “The Freshmen”. Anytime one of your favs get signed to mainstream it’s over. Look at REM when they left IRS. Mollica is a bit younger than I am but he might remember Gin Blossoms when they were playing AZ clubs in their PHJ (pre-hey-jealousy) Days. Hell, look at the Rio and likely Barbary Coast after Harrah’s bought ‘em. I guess Bevertainment must be a Portuguese (they speak that in Rio) for crappy drink service.
Pawn a saw to win 18 million. Only in Pahrump.
Here is a Not Iowa happening I heard on the Metro Police Scanner (yeah, you can listen to it over the Internet and it is hilarious). They were looking for a guy in an electric wheelchair headed northbound on The 15. I am surprised it wasn’t Boulder HWY on his way to a hot poker game and a hotdog.
Great read trainfan! And all this time I’ve been playing $1 Video Poker! I might have to relook those penny slots…
Speaking of Trainfan and REM..
I saw Stipe singing that song..”Auctioneer..another engine” during the ‘Life’s Rich Pageant’ tour, I rember a big screen in back with lots of black & white footage of old engines moving around a rail-yard.)
I know that song was from ‘Fables of the Reconstruction’, but I seem to recall it being listed as something like Engine #48 on the original issue(not auctioneer)-though I could be mistaken.
I still like Train. Interesting ‘good bands gone bad’ postings. Verve Pipe and Gin Blossoms. I guess everyone has something in their closet. However, if CelineDionFan appears with a posting I am out of here.
No Celine Dion posts..but
..name the famous female singer who collapsed on-stage in Vegas 32 years ago..clue-she was “on-top”.
Easy! Karen Carpenter. Ironically I learned she gave her last performance at the MGM Grand in 1978. Except that MGM Grand was really what is now Bally’s. Bally’s, real nice to build your casino inside the shell of an old burnt out one. The sickest thing about the MGM fire was that they found dead people melted to slot machines because they would not quit playing.
DD, The old REM concerts with the film playing behind them were awesome. I sat next to the projector at the ASU activity center in Tempe for the Green Tour. The thing opened with the words: “Hello (your city here). We are so happy to be back in (your city here). Of all of the places we play, we look foreward to returning to (your city here) the most.”
Straight Outta Fenville, that’s the most disturbing thing I’ve heard in a while (people melted to the slots). I’m all for the machines but good lord if I saw a blazing fire I’d definitely GTFO! (After I got my redemption ticket from the machine of course).
If you guys haven’t heard of Aware Records and their annual compilation CD’s you should check them out – great way to hear some of these bands before they were anybodies.
Aware 5 had two Train songs (http://www.awarestore.com/item6700)
Aware 3 -1995 ( http://www.awarestore.com/item6697 ) Featured a band called Tabitha’s Sister – who soon thereafter changed their name to Matchbox20.
Aware 2 – 1994 ( http://www.awarestore.com/item6696 ) featured the aforementioned Verve Pipe, Hootie and the Blowfish, Better then Ezra, Vertical Horizon, and Dave Matthews doing back up vocals for Shannon Worrell.

Here’s hoping Brian and Tommy never make it out of Iowa!
Checked out the Rainbow Room Website that Slashdog mentioned – and if the hostess in the picture was the one working it would be a little tough to give the rock star too much grief.
